MEANWHILE IN THE WOODS…

wood, metal poles
W 3,2m L 5m H 5,7m

In the woods of the Oude Buisse Heide, connecting to the history of the place and seeking the much appreciated silence of Henriette en Richard Roland Holst, I came across the canal of Oud Turfvaart.
Its banks overgrown with ferns descend in steep slope towards the water. It runs in a straight line towards Breda, 26km long and 3m wide, built in 1620 for tugboats to transport peat.
The sculpture "Meanwhile in the woods ..." is an organic wooden form planted in the bank of the Oud Turfvaart. A staircase descends to the water inside a giant ribcage extending over the canal. The curvature of the six ribs encloses the visitor on the tribune. On the inside of the ribs the form is partially roofed and provides a shelter. The view over the water opens up.
The work connects to the tradition of Community art, art in the service of the people, respected and practised by Henriette and Richard Roland Holst.
