DAKDIJK (ROOFDIKE)

2008
De Service Garage, Amsterdam, NL

H 2,3m W 5,3m L 27,5m
wood, BeeBoard® cardboard, weather

Entering the roof of the Service Garage, the outlook gets blocked by a cardboard dike extending across the whole width of the roof.
Upon climbing it, the view is slowly revealed. The shielded part of the roof acts as a landscape on its own: with a small (staircase)cabin, lamp post, rainwater puddle and ventilation ducts.
The dike keeps changing like a living organism: the cardboard bends from moisture and warmth, it colours in the sunlight and gets worn out by use. Eventually, the cardboard casing falls apart and only the wooden carcass remains.
