The idea for this work arose from the obvious properties of the space Het Oog in the
Van Abbemuseum: the abundance of natural light and the spectacular glass aquarium/showcase-like front. I wanted to create work that makes use of this in an ultimate way.
...The most wonderful thing in the room is the light coming through the window into the room. The sun did not know how great it was before there was ever a place built...Louis Khan
Installation 'Kamers uitgelicht' is a system of interconnected spaces offered to the sight of the visitors in 'the showcase’ of Het Oog. Sections of spaces are being presented to the viewer, who, without having to enter, gains access to the experiencing of the interior: as a voyeur, an outside observer.
Normally, this kind of spatial perception is bound to photos, movies and paintings of rooms. Now the flat images are real and three-dimensional.
The spaces/rooms that are part of the installation represent their species, a certain stereotype: a room at home, an office room, an outdoor gallery, a long corridor, a staircase... The rooms are interlinked by corridors, outdoor spaces and various in-between spaces.
During the six months the spaces change their form, They transform from one situation to another and thereby to a slightly another space. The central theme of these transformations is light and its various physical and visual forms and contentual associations.
On the go, visual references are being made to other artists, architects and writers who are engaged in the topic of lightfall, light and shadow in relation to space. From the old masters to the contemporary ones: Lauretta Vinciarelli, Louis Barrágan, Tadao Ando, James Turell, Bob Wilson, Giorgio Chirico, Gregory Schneider, Vermeer, Rembrandt, André Kruysen, George Pérec...
